Vertical Aerospace announced the ECLiPSE charging and thermal-management program on July 24, 2026 with the University of Bath and InnCat. The company described a project worth about £3.4 million, including proposed government support subject to the grant process. The objective is to improve charging infrastructure for electric aircraft.

A fast aircraft is not automatically a productive aircraft. If it spends a long time waiting on the ground between trips, a service may need more vehicles to maintain its timetable. Charging performance therefore belongs beside flight performance in any serious account of eVTOL economics.

Our analysis: turnaround is a complete sequence, not a charger’s headline power rating. Passengers leave, the aircraft is checked, energy is restored and the next flight is prepared. Thermal conditions can influence how quickly a battery can be readied. Improving one step is valuable only if another step does not become the dominant delay.

The most useful results would demonstrate repeatable turnaround under realistic conditions and explain the installation requirements at a site. Operators also need to understand the power connection, maintenance burden and compatibility of supporting equipment. ECLiPSE addresses a practical part of the system that receives less attention than flight footage, but it could strongly influence how frequently future aircraft can serve passengers.
